Click for 6 pics in Picasa. Just a two night stopover in San Francisco to recover our senses after a 14 hour flight, before heading on to New York, another 5 hours.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express San Francisco – Airport South. Excellent hotel with a free shuttle to the airport and BART station and free wi-fi. Fascinating to watch the planes landing on the two runways, often side by side, from the hotel which was just across the water from the airport.

New San Francisco looks to us like a concrete jungle with spaghetti fly-overs and umpteen lane freeways, and endless urban sprawl.

Old San Francisco is as charming as ever, with painted houses, steep hills and cable cars. We caught the BART to “downtown” and enjoyed the bay air while walking along the wharf area, then took the California Street cable car up to Chinatown and Union Square. Lovely warm weather and enjoying the ambiance.
